TOP DAWG CRAPPIE GUIDE SERVICES

Top Dawg was founded by Terry Mabrey in 2021 in the middle of the global pandemic. The timing was not coincidental. With so many people being cooped up to avoid the illness, Top Dawg enabled a goodly number of outdoor types to get out on the water and enjoy some recreation, not to mention catch some tasty fish for future meals.

Top Dawg has a rather unique service by offering guiding on a wide range of lakes, rivers and creeks. Most lakes in the North and Northeast Texas area (more than 15) may be requested by our guests that range from giant reservoirs to smaller, protected lakes located over a broad area. Other guide services typically offer only one or two lakes which may not be conveniently located for guests.

Terry has a passion for teaching the fundamentals and nuances, tips and tricks, and joys and camaraderie of Crappie fishing, which makes him especially able to guide guests to the fish, help them develop or improve their fishing skills, and enjoy a relaxing and yet exciting fishing and catching adventure. Many of our guests are repeat customers which speaks volumes.

We offer three different types of trips: boat, kayak and bank (on foot). Our boat is a stable and well equipped Lowe aluminum boat which will handle two guests comfortably. Our Old Town kayaks are wonderfully equipped with a Minn Kota trolling motor and uses Garmin Panoptix Livescope to hunt down the Dawg Crappie. Kayak trips may be offered as kayak rentals which would allow the accompanying Top Dawg staff to also keep fish. More information on our water, trips, watercraft, and equipment can be found on our Trips page and in our Frequently Asked Questions document.

We invite you to book a trip or rental with Top Dawg Crappie Guide Services so you too can experience the thrill of the “THUMP”! And also take a look at the Top Dawg Crappie Guide Services Facebook page for more interesting photos, info and fun!

TERRY MABREY, GUIDE

Terry was born and bred in Hobbs, New Mexico where he learned to fish almost as soon as he learned to walk. Even as a youngster, fishing was his life. He spent many days and countless hours chasing fish in the local creeks, rivers, lakes and ponds. His family moved around a lot in Southeastern New Mexico but also spent time in Southern Louisiana and Northern Texas. Being part of a very large family with a very tight budget, fishing was not just a way of life, it was a way of survival for his family. Even more than merely fishing, being successful at “catching” was critical. Failure at fishing was not an option, unless you enjoyed going hungry. These experiences during Terry’s formative years deepened his passion for the sport, heightened his competitive nature, and led to his own personal approach to and philosophy of fishing. You can read more of his story, his history, his passion and his philosophy below… in his own words.

BARFLY FISHING TEXAS

To share his passion for fishing and to help educate and entertain fellow fisherman, Terry created the “Barfly Fishing Texas” YouTube channel in January 2019. Terry has created over 170 videos for this channel which focus primarily on Crappie fishing in the lakes, rivers and creeks at which he offers guide services through Top Dawg Crappie Guide Services.

The BarFly channel videos are packed with solid fishing information for anglers, both novices and experts alike. The videos cover all times of the year, fishing depths, fish habitat and structure, weather conditions, water types, seasonal fish movements, fishing methods and more.

Terry is gifted in understanding what kind of help and information fishermen are wanting, as well as the level of entertainment that fellow anglers most seek out and enjoy, and the BarFly YouTube channel videos reflect that. The rapid growth of the channel subscribers is a testament to Terry’s skill at successful fishing, providing useful and educational information, projecting a fun, playful and entertaining atmosphere and developing quality and aesthetically pleasing videos.

Over 12,000 subscribers to the channel can’t be wrong and the number of fellow anglers joining the channel is climbing every month. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to check out the BarFly Fishing Texas videos. If you do, we know one thing for certain… you’ll be HOOKED!

CRAPPIE SOCIETY

To share his passion for fishing and to help inform, entertain and facilitate communication between fellow fisherman, Terry created a Facebook group in October 2020 called “Crappie Society”. The intent was to offer a new group to the public where anyone who joins the group could post info and photos from their own fishing expeditions for other members of the group to see, enjoy and respond to / comment on. While most of the posts highlight crappie fishing in Texas, some anglers post photos of catches of other species, such as bass. The group has become very active with many frequent content and comments. There may even be posts showing the recent results of fishing outings on your favorite lake along with info on how they were caught.

The result has been a hit with the fishing community in Texas and even beyond the borders of the State. There are even a number of subscribers to the group from outside of the United States. It is clear that fishing, particularly for Crappie, is a global phenomenon. This wide-spread popularity has led to a plethora of other names for the species including “sac-a-lait” ( translated ‘sack of milk’), papermouths, strawberry bass, speckled bass or specks, speckled perch, white perch, crappie bass, calico bass and Oswego bass. But whatever you call them, once they’re on your dinner plate, you’ll call them “Yum”!

Check out Crappie Fishing Texas Society on Facebook. And tell them “Terry sent me”.
